Alderman Walter Burnett Jr.,
Please advocate for the Richard M. Daley Library and other Chicago Public Libraries on the hearing date (November 2, 2011) and the voting dates (November 9 and November 16, 2011). Libraries are a necessary resource for every community in this time of economic hardship. Communities utilize libraries everyday to: access the Internet and learn how to use computers; create resumes and apply for jobs; print/send government forms; borrow free information resources; meet people and make friends; complete homework; and participate in library programs for people of all-ages. The list continues to grow as we move further into the 21st century. Every year, it becomes increasingly necessary for library staff to provide professional guidance to Chicagoans who are unfamiliar with information and communication technology. Everyday, library staff foster digital inclusion in their communities.
Many Chicagoans would appreciate more CPL branches open on Sundays. Many Chicagoans would utilize a 24/7 library.
I know money is tight, but cutting the library budget is not right.
Library staff are currently stretched as thin as possible.
These budget cuts would leave two library staff members and one librarian to serve patrons at each branch, each day; the library needs more staff, not fewer!
What ever happened to educational standards?
Libraries empower the communities they serve. A well-funded and fully staffed library system is a symbol of Democracy, intellectual freedom, and equality. Please don’t impede intellectual freedom and equality in the 27th ward. Vote to keep libraries fully funded. Vote in favor of an Amendment to the city budget that ensures the full funding for much needed library staff, resources, and services. This is important. Do the right thing!
Your ward needs this library and all of the library staff.

Thank you for your time and thoughtful action.

“In New York, Save NYC Libraries has been hosting creative events to protest the proposed cuts: a bunch of library huggers got together to give the library a big squeeze and a group of library supporters spent 24 hours protesting the cuts for the We Will Not Be Shushed 24-Hour Read-In.”
